Most of us go to parties, both informal and formal. These occasions may be celebrations of
birthdays, promotions, weddings and the New Year, or they may be part of
student reunions, business activities, or greeting ceremonies for important
visitors. All these parties have
one thing in common: a large
amount of freely available food and drinks. We need to know how to maintain a
healthy lifestyle if we have an active
¾ or overactive ¾ social life. Subheading 1:
_______________
Drinking one or two glasses of water before a party helps us in more ways than one. It not only prevents the dehydration that alcohol can cause, but it gives us a full feeling, helping us to avoid overeating. Subheading 2:
_______________
We should be aware that we may eat unhealthy food at a party, and have a plan to eat moderately and wisely in the days before and after the event. This means our diet will remain balanced over the long term. Subheading 3:
_______________
There are usually large quantities of unhealthy items available at parties, ranging from cake to spirits. The human mind has a craving for foods containing sugar and fats, especially in combination. We need to think about this, and face temptation with a firm resolve to indulge ourselves only in moderation. This applies to caffeinated drinks as well as alcoholic ones, as caffeine has several undesirable effects. Subheading 4:
_______________
Chewing food slowly is always a good idea, as it aids digestion, but at a wedding banquet lasting several hours it is even more beneficial. By chewing food very slowly instead of gulping it down, we can reduce our total intake. Similarly, alcoholic drinks should be sipped now and then, so the consumption of one drink takes a long time. Subheading 5:
_______________
If you have the choice, sit down and eat a complete meal rather than standing around near the cocktail buffet with a glass in one hand. Snacking on sweet or oily food makes us lose all sense of how much we have eaten, whereas a complete meal with carbohydrates makes us feel satisfied sooner. Subheading 6: _______________
By concentrating on our own breathing
for a minute or two every now and then, we become relaxed and more
self-aware, instead of experiencing a nervousness which encourages excessive
eating and drinking.
Subheading 7:
_______________
We can exercise even at a party, perhaps by taking a short brisk walk around the neighbourhood, or even by walking up and down stairs in an apartment building. This will stimulate the digestive system, and add to our sense of well-being, which in turn will reduce our appetite for unhealthy food and drinks. All in all, we should be aware of the need for a healthy
lifestyle no matter how many parties we go to. |
